Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is a therapeutic approach developed by psychologist Paul Gilbert that integrates principles from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and Buddhist psychology to help individuals who struggle with high levels of shame, self-criticism, or self-blame. CFT focuses on cultivating self-compassion and activating the brain’s soothing system to promote emotional healing, regulate threat-based emotions, and foster a sense of safety, connection, and inner balance. It is particularly effective for individuals with trauma, depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, and encourages the development of a kind and understanding relationship with oneself.
