Self-Awareness

« Back to Glossary Index

Self-awareness is the ability to notice and understand your own thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, beliefs, values, needs, and behavioral patterns. It involves paying attention to what is happening within you without immediately judging, avoiding, or reacting to it.

Self-awareness also includes recognizing how your past experiences, relationships, culture, environment, and current circumstances influence the way you interpret situations and make decisions. It helps you identify your strengths, limitations, triggers, habits, and areas for personal growth.

As self-awareness increases, you become better able to pause, reflect, and choose actions that align with your values and long-term goals. This supports emotional regulation, healthier relationships, responsible decision-making, and a stronger sense of personal agency.
