Therapy Program & Universal Treatment Plan
Initial Consultation Session

The Consultation
I offer a free initial consultation session for clients starting therapy which serves as an opportunity for both myself and the client to determine if we are a good fit for working together. This session typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and can be conducted via phone, video call, or in-person. I send a public disclosure statement and Vermont Statutes & Office of Professional Regulation (OPR) statement for clients to review before the first session.
I will begin the session by warmly greeting you, introducing myself, sharing the disclaimer regarding confidentiality, and explaining the purpose of the consultation. Seeking therapy can be a significant step so I will offer a supportive, nonjudgmental space for you to ask questions.
I will ask you how you came to find me, whether you have worked with other therapists in the past, and if you are exploring other options still. I will then ask you to briefly describe their reasons for seeking therapy, such as: current stressors, challenges, or concerns (e.g., anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues); and your goals and what you hope to gain from therapy. This discussion is not meant to be an in-depth assessment but rather a way for me to understand your needs and whether my approach aligns with what you are looking for. I will discuss the software and technology I use, the purpose of each and the benefits of each. I will describe informed consent, ethical standards of practice, insurance requirements, medical necessity and mental capacity.
I will provide a brief overview of my education, training, experience, credentials, therapeutic style, specializations, and the methods I use. This might include: therapeutic modalities (e.g., Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Dialectical Behavior Therapy); my approach to collaboration and client-centered care; how I tailor the treatment plan to individual needs; and the expected structure of sessions (e.g., weekly sessions, duration, and format). You will have the opportunity to ask questions about: my experience and training; the therapeutic process and what to expect in sessions; confidentiality and privacy policies; and logistics such as scheduling, session length, fees, and payment options.
If we both feel comfortable moving forward, we will discuss scheduling an official intake session. I will then outline the initial paperwork, including informed consent, intake forms, and any pre-session questionnaires that help guide the first full session. If I feel that another provider would be a better fit for the client’s needs, I may offer referrals to other professionals or suggest alternative resources. If I feel that you would be better suited with a higher level of care, I may offer alternative referrals. If I feel that your needs at this time may not satisfy medical necessity requirements, we will discuss your options.
I will end the session by expressing my appreciation for your time and encourage you to take your time in making a decision. I will reinforce the idea that therapy is a collaborative process and that finding the right fit is essential for effective treatment. This free consultation allows you to explore your options, gain clarity, and feel empowered in choosing a therapist who aligns with your needs.
